This is our Cooper or as they named him in the NICU “Cooper the Trooper”
Cooper turned 2 yesterday, a day we thought we never see. Born on 10/09/2023 at 26 weeks with Congenital PUV resulting in stage 5 CKD he had a very stormy start to life. With little to no hope given as he was too tiny for dialysis he remarkably beaten odds and fought everyday of his 116 days in NICU, multiple infections including NEC and pseudomonas all at once resulting in being intubated numerous times but he fought it all and eventually we got him home in January 2024 a day I will never forget 🥹
We managed a full year at home on medication and special diet restrictions with regular blood tests and monitoring from the amazing Renal team at the RBHSC. At the beginning of 2025 Coopers health started deteriorating and his little body just needed that extra help so the decision was made it was time to be put on Perinatal Dialysis, he had his PD catheter inserted in February and we were trained to carry this out at home. He continues to thrive at home on 11 hours of PD 7 nights a week and is now also being fed through NG from May this year.
We are currently going through the testing process for a transplant in the future 🙏This year has far from being easy and with a house move in the middle of it all I couldn’t of done it without the help and support from CKFNI, this amazing charity has greatly supported us from the beginning, from setting up Coopers room for dialysis, at Christmas times and when moving home.
